WHAT THE HELL IS SUVIN COTTON?
If you’ve never heard of suvin cotton before, there’s a reason why: Quite simply, it’s extremely rare. Suvin cotton is a luxurious, extra-long staple cotton that grows longer than 1 ½ inches, making it one the longest cotton fibers in the world. The longer the cotton fibers are, the softer and more durable the cotton is.
Suvin cotton, also known as “white gold,” is a hybrid of the ancient Egyptian cotton Karnak Menoufi and the Sea Island cotton from the St. Vincent Island in the Caribbean. They’re handpicked and organically grown in the Tamil Nadul region of India for its soil and climate conditions, although ongoing climate changes make production more limited.
(Our Japanese factory partner is dedicated to keeping this cycle alive by continuing to support suvin cotton production in India.) The first pick of suvin cotton, also referred to as suvin platinum, is considered the purest and of the highest quality.
HOW DOES SUVIN COTTON GET MANUFACTURED IN JAPAN?
The first pick of suvin cotton gets spun into a beautiful, fine yarn. This happens in Rajapalayam, India (in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu) or in Japan at our factory partner in Wakayama, Japan. The fibers are loosened and hand-combed many times as possible so that the fibers aren’t damaged and the oil content is not lost.
What results is a smooth, silky, and elegant handfeel, with an almost lustrous texture. This fabric is exceptionally soft, but durable enough to resist wrinkling and pilling.
The fabric is then washed and undergoes a thoughtful Japanese dyeing and finishing process before it’s cut and sewn into RANDOM/RANDOM t-shirts. T-shirt construction happens at a garment factory in Niigata Prefecture, known for its precision to detail and its long history of traditional craftsmanship.
There are quality control checkpoints every step of the way, as is the Japanese manufacturing way.
HOW DO I WEAR SUVIN COTTON?
