Alexey Yurenev – Editions of 10

WELCOME TO THE EXIT

Photographs by Alexey Yurenev. Five editions of 10.

Alexey Yurenev spent two years photographing Brighton Beach — South Brooklyn’s enclave of post-Soviet émigrés, often called Little Odessa. Then he went to the real one.

What followed was two more years in Odessa, Ukraine, walking thirty kilometers a day with a medium-format camera. The pictures that came back are not of the war, and not of the city as a subject. They are of what happens at the edges of a place: goats grazing on an abandoned beach pergola, a bronze dolphin lying on blue cobblestone, a bride and groom kissing on a rock with a capsized tanker behind them, a child on a quad bike in front of a decommissioned submarine.

Five of those photographs are now printed on RANDOM/RANDOM garments. Each in an edition of 10.

In the artist’s own words:

Odessa, Ukraine—the “big” Odessa—was my eventual destination after two years photographing Brighton Beach, South Brooklyn’s enclave of post-Soviet émigrés often called Little Odessa.

I felt a connection the moment I arrived. A place I had never been, yet somehow already knew. It became a photographic love affair — what I saw outside was a mirror of my own inner landscape. Over two years I walked 30 kilometers a day, compulsively photographing, nostalgic for images I had never seen before, uncovering a reality that is truly stranger than fiction. What began as a search for a place became a way of recognizing it within myself.
